Saskatchewan, a province of Canada, is located in the heart of North America. To the east and west are, respectively, the provinces of Manitoba and Alberta, to the north are Canada's North West Territories, and to the south are the US states of Montana and North Dakota. Saskatchewan is rich in natural resources. Approximately the same size as Texas, over half of the province is forested. Most of the population live in the southern half of Saskatchewan, where the economy is largely based on agriculture with wheat being the most familiar crop. Mining is also a major industry with potash being a principal export. In addition, Saskatchewan is also the world's most important supplier of uranium. Saskatchewan's climate varies considerably by season. Its summers are hot and dry with long hours of sunshine. Winter temperatures are generally cold and snowy. The highest rainfall occurs between April and June. The name Saskatchewan is derived from the Cree Indian word kisiskatchewanisipi which means "swift flowing river", and was first used to describe the Saskatchewan River.
